Wine Country is a new minimalist rock trio led by guitarist/singer Matt Kivel in a marked departure from his decade-long songwriting career on indie labels like Woodsist and Olde English Spelling Bee. Their songs are sparse, jittery and propulsive, framed around Kivel's sardonic narratives. Wine Country is what would happen if Dostoevsky's Underground Man had been forced to endure a happy hour DJ set from MML Hospitality. Or if the animatronic animals at Disney World walked off their metal stumps, stole an electric truck and drove in a drunken haze to the desert. The band members hate each other. They might eventually try to sell you homemade borscht. Drummer Andy Aylward has done stints in Dark Tea and Coke Weed while bassist John Zakoor leads indie poppers YAWNY.
