“I began working on lyrical iterations of Ocracoke about a decade ago, at first in tandem with a musical idea my brother had laid down. Though the full story never came together back then, I always had the two verses in the back of my mind. Flash forward to a couple years ago when an old friend, Sage Francis reached out, asking if I would want to work with a producer friend of his, Aupheus. I don’t normally do blind date collaborations, but Sage sent me the beat and it was really infectious. For some reason, those two old verses came to mind and as I tried them over the beat, they seemed to fit perfectly. The various sung vocal sections came together quickly and naturally, clarifying the story. It’s a lonesome song of bittersweet memories with a vague sense of romantic possibility.”
