Volunteer Department hails from Indianapolis, IN but is currently based out of Nashville, TN. Rooted in friendship and the fine art of chilling at home, their writing draws influences from
Bach to
The Breeders—even though they don't really sound like either. With a no-BS approach to their lyrics and a “less-is-more” philosophy in the arrangements that prop them up, Volunteer Department’s work leans left of center. Their lyrically straightforward songs feature rip-cord melodies bundled and delivered in organic-meets-digital arrangements. The band began as
Oliver Hopkins’ bedroom recording project and has featured collaborators such as
Luke Schneider,
Zac Farro,
Parker James,
Gusti Escalante,
Cody Carpenter, and
Hannah Dorfman.
Their upcoming album,
Fountainhead, asks the question “are you the root or the worm?” and was produced by
Ben Lumsdaine (known for his work with
Wishy,
Durand Jones, and
Kevin Krauter).
Fountainhead is set to drop this September via Nashville’s Like You Mean It Records. The album's lyrics are also the key to unlocking the secrets of
Fountainhead the Game, an interactive fiction experience developed by the band, releasing this Halloween on
fountainhead.world.
