If Sylvie’s New Season were a movie, Ben Schwab would be the auteur, writing and directing the vision, articulating his story through a cast of characters. New Season is Sylvie’s first record with Ghostly International, and it finds the Los Angeles-based artist at the helm of a rotating ensemble, arriving at pure, joyous expression and renewed faith in the face of hardship. It’s a rare and refined kind of musical gesture, both intimate and all-embracing, self-produced, penned singularly, delivered collectively.
Like Sylvie’s self-titled effort, New Season still rings of the sunny, lighthearted, and smooth 1960s and ’70s sonics that have become the project’s signature. While Schwab constructed Sylvie in 2021, mainly with friends in his orbit, stemming from his time playing in other bands and peripheral projects, he has broadened the scope tenfold for his full-length debut, New Season. The shapeshifting collective executes on an alluring mix of nostalgic and modern sensibilities, evoking the spirit of Laurel Canyon and the songwriting tradition of Nashville with a contemporary sheen.
Schwab recorded New Season primarily in the same home studio as his self-titled debut, then traveled to London's Abbey Road Studios to put the finishing touches on the album and master it, giving the songs a bigger, more expansive feel. While a true Los Angeles record, it also brims with Nashville-adjacent talent. Various musicians enter the fold on pedal steel, drums, organ, horns, strings, and more. Schwab moves across myriad instruments, sharing the mic with a lineup of vocalists, including Sierra Ferrell, Courtney Marie Andrews, Alex Amen, Kacy Lee Anderson, and others. The convergence here, a remarkable roster spanning two of America’s great music cities, brings to mind Bob Dylan’s Nashville Skyline period, or Neil Young heading down to LA with his ever-evolving band.
Like the passing of a day, New Season unfolds in two chapters. Side A greets the morning with movement, searching, and discovery. Side B settles into night, turning inward to reflect on the grief we carry home. “Rina” is a twangy slow march sung by Alex Amen, reviving a song written by Schwab’s father in the 1970s (as part of the recently reissued cult favorite band Mad Anthony). ‘Rain is coming down on LA tonight,’ sings Courtney Marie Andrews on “Guiding Star,” which sprawls out in striking, piano-backed soft-rock splendor to survey loss and light, a gratitude for friendship. With “California Hills,” Sierra Ferrell hauntingly sings ‘… that’s all there is’, carrying the album to its final chapter, closing one season, while welcoming the next.
More than an album, New Season reflects a life shaped by renewed faith and a growing sense of hope. Sylvie offers an invitation to find beauty after loss, embrace joy without forgetting what came before, and trust that even the longest winters can give way to a New Season.
