Plenty of adjectives have been flung around to describe Sunset Honor Unit’s sound, but
“single-minded” certainly isn’t one of them. That feature is by design: head songwriters Drew
Kirby
and Jake Chisenhall founded the group around a Lennon-McCartney-esque songwriting
partnership. On their debut EP and subsequent 2023 album, the band's early iteration focused
on Everly Brothers-inspired harmonies and on honing their songcraft, while largely eschewing
strict genre boundaries.

Shortly after the release of their debut LP, Desire Paths, the ‘Unit’ underwent a sizable lineup
shakeup, leaving the band without a rhythm section for a time. Before the permanent additions
of drummer John Restivo, bassist Miller May, and keyboardist Jason Bronson, Kirby and
Chisenhall spent a brief period writing and performing as a duo. That newfound space and
intimacy helped inspire the richer balladry and playful storytelling that runs throughout their
forthcoming record, In The House of the Highest Dead Ends.

Now fully assembled, Sunset Honor Unit offers an expansive tapestry of sounds and stories on
its latest release. This time around, Chisenhall and Kirby double down on the country &
western elements hinted at on their debut: tall tales of romances on the road, fictitious trysts
with lovelorn cowpokes, and mostly true accounts of run-ins with law enforcement help cement
the band’s country bona fides. The group draws from a wide-ranging c&w lineage, both subtle
and overt. The Flying Burrito Brothers, Roy Rogers and the Sons of the Pioneers, Buck Owens,
Willie Nelson, Patsy Cline, John Prine, and plenty of others are channeled within the walls of the
house.

Likewise, the sonic contributions of each member extend well beyond their primary instruments.
The record is packed with pedal steel and baritone guitars, flocks of woodwinds, gang vocals,
playful percussion, and studio chatter supplied by the entire group. The result is a colorful,
eclectic collection of songs that serves as a declarative reintroduction to Sunset Honor Unit.
