Slime Ring is the Atlanta based queer latinx experimental and/or pop project of Sebastian Marquez. Synthesizing his love of artists like Yellow Magic Orchestra / Sketch Show and Radiohead, along with video soundtracks like Evergrace (Kota Hoshino) and Ape Escape (Soichi Terada), Slime Ring makes music that can be dream pop, drum 'n bass, or the soundtrack to a video game you haven’t played yet – often at the same time.
Taking on the engineering and mixing duties during the creation of this album allowed Marquez a level of freedom in experimentation beyond what he had done before. Heavily processed non-instruments and a blend of acoustic and electronic elements give Slime Ring EP2 a decidedly organic yet otherworldly feeling. This is highlighted in the sole collaboration on the EP, with fellow Atlantan Anna Staddon (Saline, Scooterbabe) performing the piano and vocals on “Sangramos Los Colores.” The rest of the instrumentation is processed and chopped-up recordings of household objects like styrofoam, wooden spoons, and metal bowls alongside auto-tuned background vocals and out-of-time sequencers. Even though the record sounds like a dream you’ve downloaded to a flash drive, Slime Ring EP2 represents Slime Ring aiming to take hold of the collective unconscious and take it to places we haven’t been before.
