Sarah Katherine Lawless is a NYC-based indie-folk-pop artist whose cinematic composition blends diaristic storytelling with richly textured arrangements. Raised in a musical family in the northern Virginia suburbs, Lawless grew up absorbing everything from theater and ballet to the eclectic mix of artists her father played on long drives. Those early listening experiences sparked a fascination with how lyrics and melody could become an emotional escape
She wrote her first song at nine on a toy cassette recorder and began developing her sound throughout high school, recording late-night demos and sharing them on SoundCloud. While studying at Boston Conservatory at Berklee College of Music, Lawless expanded her creative process by teaching herself guitar through writing rather than covers, developing an intuitive style built around unconventional voicings and expressive arrangements.
Drawing inspiration from artists like
Lucy Dacus,
Julia Jacklin, and
Madison Cunningham, as well as the narrative craftsmanship of
Stephen Sondheim, Lawless approaches songwriting as both storyteller and composer. Her music often layers intimate lyricism with nuanced instrumentation, allowing melodies and harmonies to express emotions that words alone cannot. She continues to build a body of work defined by emotional honesty, intricate musicianship, and a fearless commitment to personal storytelling.
Now, Sarah Katherine Lawless returns with her second EP,
Look Alive. Where her debut, Look What I’m Learning!, lamented on the growing pains of early adulthood,
Look Alive confronts the aftermath - unpacking frustration, sitting with sadness, and rebuilding self-worth and self-determination in the journey of trying to get to where you want to be, and the worry that you never will. Filled with clarity, unflinching honesty and a self-assured indie-songwriter sound, Look Alive captures the messy, nonlinear process that growth requires.
Look Alive was communally produced with
Jake Aron (
Snail Mail,
Sarah Kinsley,
Chloe
Moriondo),
Jack Harrington (
Shallow Alcove), and, Sarah Katherine’s closest
collaborator,
Isaiah Beard (
Angela Autumn,
Jack Van Cleaf,
BAERD). Beard’s one-of-one, spaced-out touch transmutes each song’s atmosphere into the stratosphere. His arrangements are as poetic as Lawless is lyrical, a fusion that injects a startling, delicious edge into pristine pop songwriting.
Look Alive is only the very first taste of a musical partnership that may well redefine the indie folk sound.
