Over the past 12 months, Palmyra spent several weeks in the studio working to create the follow-up to our first full-length record and debut album release, Restless. We’re a band that never stops writing and arranging new songs together, which we consider one of our greatest super powers as a group; the tunes keep coming, they keep evolving, and our ideas and instincts while recording have adapted as we’ve spent more time in studios.
Since Restless, our sound has changed, just as our lives, ears, and tastes have. Cheap Beer feels like the next natural step in the progression of Palmyra, leaning more heavily into indie rock and alternative folk while showcasing our growth as a band unit and as individual musicians and songwriters. Where Restless was about the tumult and chaos of our early years as a young band on the road, these songs feel more settled, just as we have become in our own personhood. Cheap Beer exists in a multitude of emotions and soundscapes, jumping from the title track’s fun-bummer-wild-exhausted character to the bold, sometimes psychedelic nature of “Blame Game”, the ethereal dreamscape of “Sleep Softly”, the mechanical chaos of “Guilty”, and ending with the quiet heaviness of “Pick Me Up”.
Our new songs, in classic Palmyra fashion, tackle Big Emotions – looking at you, grief, exhaustion, disassociation, and guilt.
We brought in our dear friends Erik Kase Romero (The Front Bottoms) as producer and Danny Gibney (Dogwood Tales) as our engineer for these sessions. This EP was recorded at Fidelitorium in Kernersville, NC and in our Richmond homebase at Space Bomb Studios.
On Cheap Beer, Palmyra is Teddy Chipouras, Mānoa Bell, and Sasha Landon, with Samir Tawalare on drums. Samir has been playing, touring, and recording with the band full-time since 2025 and has been a major force behind the feel of these new songs, bringing his joy and brilliance to every session and show. Our new pals John Mailander and Jason Summer lent their prowess on fiddle and pedal steel, respectively, to these songs, too. Cheap Beer is proudly released on our incredible record label, Oh Boy Records.
