New Strangers is a 3 piece, post punk band from Austin, Texas featuring Kyle Carpenter (vocals, guitar), Benton Kaufman (bass) and Nick Stout (drums). Heavily influenced by the 80's and 90's indie sound, New Strangers plays a mix of both short and hook-filled post punk bangers, and more drawn-out and improvisational songs. Since the members of the group had been playing with each other in various forms over the last decade (Unknown Relatives, Drags, LATE), and happened to all live under one roof, things came together pretty quickly in the summer of 2019. After a little less than a year together, the pandemic slowed the writing process down for a while, but in the fall of 2022, the band was finally ready to record its first full-length album. Carpenter’s guitar playing hits the listener with a blistering wall of melodicism and grit. Most lyrical themes tend to circle around a very intense sense of anxiety and fear. Drummer Nick Stout and bassist Benton Kaufman provide a propulsive but steady foundation that keeps the whole train from devolving into echoey chaos. With an energetic live show and a debut album coming out this summer, New Strangers are just getting started.
