Far West Records is pleased to announce Miles Hewitt’s new A/B single, “Living the Dream” b/w “Art & Life,” out 10/22.

“Living the Dream” is a roiling rollick through the End Times. Grinning ruefully from within the crumbling empire and backed by a crack team of Brooklyn session players — including drummer Sean Mullins (Andy Shauf, Sam Evian), bassist Brian Betancourt (Devendra Banhart, Cass McCombs), guitarist Jacob Drab (Allegra Krieger), and pedal steeler Jack McLoughlin (Tomberlin) — Hewitt conjures an American wasteland of microplastic wildfires, cowboy-prophets, and even Francis Fukuyama, the political scientist who infamously predicted “the end of history” as a 21st century of uninterrupted democratic stability and liberal norms (nice thought though!). Here we join “Frank,” sipping beers, passing the vape, and watching as the “void yawned wide and the stars fell in” — still, he assures us, “the good part’s starting now.”e

The nightmare continues on B-side “Art & Life,” a wry meditation on the impossibilities of big-city bohemia in 2024 — “Hard Times in New York Town” for the iPhone generation. “At least out on the West Coast, they’ll smile as they kill ya,” deadpans Hewitt, channeling the down-and-out poetics of Lou Reed, David Berman, and Elliott Smith. Culminating in an early-dawn street encounter with an angel of advice and warning (“Eat yer greens, and never forget / Death is all around you”), “Art & Life” is Hewitt’s closest-to-the-bone writing yet.

This single marks Miles Hewitt’s first new release since 2022’s full-length Heartfall, which The Boston Globe named one of the 50 Best Albums of the Year, writing: “A simply brilliant debut, by turns intimate and epic ... unlike any other record these ears heard all year.” On “Living the Dream" / “Art & Life”, Hewitt returns in full dirtbag-jester drag — yet the yearning mystic smiles through.
