For nearly a decade, Michael Seyer has quietly cemented himself as a standout voice in the indie music world. With albums like Ugly Boy (2015), Bad Bonez (2018), and A Good Fool (2021), his music fuses nostalgia with fearless artistic exploration. Now, with his upcoming album Boylife, the Los Angeles-based artist enters a transformative chapter, delivering fresh, bittersweet songwriting while staying true to his indie DIY roots.
From 2023 to 2024, Seyer toured extensively across North America and Asia before returning to Los Angeles to complete the album. Splitting his time between his home studio and Heavy Duty Music, he collaborated with co-producer Christian Taylor to shape Boylife into a lush blend of indie-folk and dream pop. The album is layered with electric and acoustic guitars, underscored by the warmth of upright piano and occasional synths. True to form, much of the instrumentation is Seyer’s own—a signature hallmark of his work—but it’s his keen sense of melody and poignant lyricism that define the record.
The album moves seamlessly through a spectrum of moods, from introspective ballads like “I Want To Be Your Dog” to funky, infectious tracks like “This is Heaven.” Songs like “Folktales” capture the album’s essence with heartfelt lines: “She reminds me of folktales / And there’s a kid in me / Laying down at the foot of my bed / He smiles while he reads.” Similarly, in the track “Taylor,” Seyer reflects, “Taylor’s got a big smile / And I don’t know how she keeps it / It bewilders and amazes / All the small boys just like me.” These lyrics encapsulate Boylife’s ethos: a wistful celebration of nostalgic youth and the determination to preserve a sense of childlike wonder through songwriting. Yet, in its aching honesty, the album recognizes the paradox that Seyer’s ability to channel such emotions only deepens with age and artistic maturity.
With three albums, four EPs, and an unwavering drive for creative growth, Boylife represents the Seyer we need—unexpected yet essential. It stands as both a reflection of his evolution and a continuation of the raw intimacy that first defined his music, serving as a bridge between the dreamer he once was and the seasoned artist he has become.
