Lost Mary, a folk songwriting project formed by Luke Martin and David Johnson III, embodies the best of Americana’s rich, storytelling tradition. Hailing from the small town of Hillsdale, Michigan, the duo has carved out a unique niche in the folk music scene, drawing inspiration from the poetic lyricism of Gregory Alan Isakov and the timeless narratives of Bob Dylan. Lost Mary is the soundtrack of front porches, late nights, lonely rooms, and smokey basements, creating an intimate and nostalgic soundscape through its use of guitar, mandolin, harmonica, banjo, piano, and cello.

Luke and David’s journey began in the small town of Hillsdale, where their shared love for music and storytelling naturally led them to collaborate. Both artists grew up immersed in the sounds of folk and Americana, with a particular fondness for artists who weave intricate stories. Their mutual admiration for the art of songwriting laid the foundation for Lost Mary.

Since 2019, Luke and David have been integral parts of the Newport Folk Festival, one of the most prestigious music festivals in the United States. They have worked alongside some of the biggest names in the industry, including Gregory Alan Isakov, Lana Del Rey, Dolly Parton, Randy Newman, Paul Simon, Hozier, Joni Mitchell, Brandi Carlile, Jason Isbell, Tyler Childers, Deer Tick, Herbie Hancock, Sheryl Crow, Maggie Rogers, Kacey Musgraves, Andrew Bird, The Milk Carton Kids, Caamp, Shakey Graves, Nathaniel Rateliff, The Felice Brothers, Chris Thile, Nickel Creek, and Thundercat. The diversity of sound at Newport significantly influenced Lost Mary’s music, enriching their sound with texture and perspective.

Lost Mary is characterized by its thoughtful lyrics and evocative melodies. Songs like “Big Blue House,” “Dogwood Flowers,” and “Donnybrook” paint vivid pictures of life's poignant moments, from the quiet solitude of a late-night reflection to the communal warmth of a front porch gathering. The ability to capture complex human experience is what sets Lost Mary apart in the contemporary folk scene.

Their sound is a delicate balance of traditional and modern influences. Luke's versatile instrumentation and David's adept guitar work create a rich, layered backdrop for their storytelling. Their harmonies are reminiscent of classic folk duos, yet their approach to songwriting is distinctly their own, blending introspective lyrics with a melodic sensibility that is both fresh and familiar.

Lost Mary's dedication to their craft and their authentic approach to music have earned them a loyal following. Their music is known for its emotional depth and genuine connection. Whether performing at a major festival or an intimate venue, Lost Mary will bring a sincerity and passion to their music that resonates deeply with listeners.

As they continue to evolve and explore new musical landscapes, Lost Mary remains committed to the essence of folk music: storytelling. With each song, Lost Mary invites listeners to experience stories that are as personal as they are universal. In a world that is constantly changing, Lost Mary's music is a comforting reminder of the enduring power of a well-told story.
