hemlock is the "phone-fi" alt-folk project fronted by swamp-raised, multi-disciplinary creative force
Carolina Chauffe, currently anchored between Austin, Chicago, and Louisiana, but more often on the road.
The full band features beloved Chicago music-makers
Bailey Minzenberger,
Andy “Red” PK, and
Jack Henry (of
Friko,
Free Range, and
Red PK, among others)
This powerhouse band propels hemlock out of the folk realm, and into a sonic space more intentionally ambiguous & genre-bending, ranging from tender finger-picking to urgent, raucous shredding. At the heart of it all remains a commitment to the unconventional, to community, to independent artistry and the care behind it.
Together, they self-released their debut full-length collaboration,
444, on October 11, 2024, which was recorded mostly-live in an immersive three days at In The Pocket (Chicago, IL), a week before Chauffe set out on what became a full year of DIY touring.
444 is named to honor the songwriter’s angel number, and as a nod to the four band members, and for the simple math of 4+4+4 equalling 12 tracks - all selections from an ongoing 12-month song-a-day project, split up into one month per year.
The album is a “best of, so far” of the previously only phone-recorded song-a-day tracks, now spanning over half a decade, and hundreds of songs.
Additionally, last spring, hemlock’s mini-album
amen! was released on Double Yolk Records (the label of
Hannah Read of
Lomelda) after being recorded in December 2023 in Silsbee, TX with a close cast of friends and heroes:
Lindsey Verrill,
Kyle Duggar,
Eric Adams,
Tommy Read, and Hannah Read. It is an exaltation, an ode to transformation, and marks a return to the south, both in sound and on map.
Doggedly DIY, Chauffe is an avid documenter, an amateur archivist, and a believer in magic, with a discography spanning hundreds of songs in half a decade, including their independently released debut full-band LP
talk soon (2022), and 5 months' worth of phone-recorded song-a-day projects (2019-present), among other works.
In addition to hemlock, Carolina has toured in and recorded in such acts as
Little Mazarn (2019-present),
Babehoven (2022),
Fran (2023), and
Merce Lemon (2023).
Presently, hemlock is a proud partner with Chicago initiative
Clean Air Club, who help to make shows COVID-safer and thus more accessible to all.
hemlock are gatherers, neighbors, and hopefuls for a free Palestine, for a free tomorrow for all. Carolina will be a road dog for as long as they can, and a music-maker for as long as they live. Their favorite color lately is green.
