GIFT began with TJ Freda alone, holed up in Brooklyn seeking to quell anxiety with transcendence. Across GIFT’s 2022 debut Momentary Presence and its 2024 successor Illuminator, Freda and his bandmates blended various strains of psychedelic music — krautrock, new wave, electronic, shoegaze — while cataloguing Freda’s battles with panic attacks. For a while, it worked. Yet Freda found himself worn down after the Illuminator cycle, once more solitary and trying to dream his way out during a short stint in Los Angeles. This time, he wanted the catharsis not to bloom, but burn. Inspired by ‘90s alt-rock, grunge, and the brasher iterations of electronic music, he returned to New York and reconvened with the rest of GIFT to record their third album, Frenzy For The Thrill. It became the sound of five musicians diving into the madness together.
Frenzy For The Thrill is GIFT’s most collaborative, band-oriented album, leaning into the ferocity and muscularity the quintet developed over rigorous touring. At the same time, GIFT partnered with Teddy Mars, the mastermind behind Samples From Mars, to adopt the ethos and structure of dance music. Inspired by obsession, fire, and self-destruction, singles like “The Fly,” “Hand To The Flame,” “Higher Than The Knife,” and “I Wanna Be A Toy” showcase GIFT’s darker side — uninhibited and wild-eyed, they capture personal and creative reinvention alike. Like the visceral pulse of a techno beat rattling around a club, Frenzy For The Thrill offers no clean resolution, but invites you to follow GIFT headlong into the unknown.
