FAVORITES OF 2024!
🎉 Happy New Year!
2024 was a challenging year, another filled with many highs and many lows, and we’re about to enter a 2025 filled with uncertainty. However, one thing is clear: we here at Tiger Bomb are fortunate to represent some of the most talented and creative artists making music today, backed by teams of people who are thoughtful and passionate. We appreciate you all so much and are so grateful for your guidance, patience, and compassion.
As always: We would like to thank all of the radio stations, artists, labels, managers, publicists, booking agents, tour managers, venue staff, interns, talent buyers, music writers, distributors, record stores, fans, radio promoters, and everyone else who keeps working hard to propel music and art into the world.
Makenzie and I also had the opportunity to work with two wonderful people, Maddy Lehr in the Spring, and Helen Howard this Fall (and continuing into 2025)! Our collected efforts garnered some impressive results too, with 5 albums reaching #1 on the NACC Top 200 Chart in 2024, and another 6 albums reaching #1 on the NACC Top Adds Chart:

My music habit’s unusual. I obsess over one artist for like a year, then go a while without listening to anything at all. Then I’ll find a new artist to listen to - to the complete exclusion of any other music - and become obsessed for a time only to eventually hibernate again. Seasonal; glacial.
Anyway, this past 7 months or so has made 2024, for me, the year of Prefab Sprout.
My closest musical collaborator Wisdom (aka Jesse Johnson) treats my musical tastes like a puzzle, or a riddle. He’ll be sending me stuff constantly, and nothing sticks, until something does. So here’s my list of the ten Prefab Sprout albums I love the most in 2024:
1: From Langley Park to Memphis (1988) What rivets me to this band is twofold: first, and most importantly is their use of chords, particularly minor 11s. I’m obsessed with chords, but 99% of songwriters use the same small handful of basics. Prefab uses exotic chords so deftly that, to me, it’s a different strata of achievement than writing something with a 1-4-5 progression. Secondly, the lyrics are beyond idiosyncratic. For example: where else will you find a song with this plot: the singer dotes on his wife at home, drives her to work where she’s his boss and he’s a lovesick puppy / best employee, only to wait for her until she’s ready for him to drive her home. At home, he goes back into husband mode and continues to dote on her. I mean…gah. Also, a song about what they think is the most beautiful phrase: “I remember that”! I mean, what??
2: Trawl the Megahertz (2003) this might be apocryphal - and I might have the dateline wrong - but around here, Paddy McAloon, the singer songwriter got tennitus and simultaneously lost his vision. It’s 95% instrumental and promo-classical and nothing like the rest of his output. One of the only time he sings, he sings “I’m lost, yes I’m lost / I’ll grow a long and silver beard”
3: Swoon (1984) I think this is their first record, and it’s possibly the most aggressively unique. The songwriting reminds me of a guy on a distant planet desperately trying to communicate with earth, but everything gets misinterpreted. So the songwriter has to work harder, harder, harder to make his meaning clear.
4: Two Wheels Good aka Steve McQueen (1984) it would be a stretch to claim this wasn’t their top album (or 2). So maybe I’m being contrarian. The only thing about it for which I have the slightest distaste: the first track implies a rockabilly vibe, and there’s a sanity to the first half of the record that’s misleading re: prefab.
5: Protest Songs (1989) This was actually neck and neck for number one, as it reminds me so much of “Langley park to Memphis”. It’s got all the extremes: the hit-like banger that’s just too weird to be acceptable (the world awake), the song fawning over princess Diana with total sincerity. And there’s songs like “horsechimes” and “talking scarlet” which are so strange and unique I want to encase them in glass to be preserved for future generations.
6: Jordan: the Comeback (1990) the first track “Atlantis” is Paddy’s message to the music industry. He’s saying: “stop searching for the great musical discovery, I’m standing right here!” A sentiment I can relate to but in my defense he was actually quite successful. Anyway this and protest songs are both extremely strong albums that simply don’t shine as bright as those higher on the list
7: Crimson /Red (2014) this appears to be their most recent missive and it’s what I’m listening to most this week so far, so, recency bias. But it’s cool to see him/ them mature and continue digging deeper. Throughout their career, their taste in production started bad and got worse. The way Prefab always sounds so slick and clean I loathe. But I ignore it to reach the juicy songwriting underneath
8: Andromeda Heights (1997) the cheesiness of the production has gone maybe too far, and the idiosyncrasies of the songwriting are obscured by their more pedestrian instincts
9: Let’s Change the World with Music (2009) yeah… this one starts with an embarrassing 90’s style rap… but I’m gonna push through! I’m certain that, on this record just like all the others, under the glossy corniness lie mysteries of styles and techniques that demand my attention.
10: Steve McQueen (acoustic) (2007) same songs as their second record. Very cool to hear alternate versions of songs. But inessential listening.

The Top Ten of my life in 2024 in no particular order…
1. TV Show: Bad Sisters | Great ensemble cast from the UK with a quicksand plot. PJ Harvey’s score is solid.
2. Film: The Substance | Think John Carpenter and Stanley Kubrick making a horror film in the 1980s… but it’s also 2024.
3. Album: Diving Deep Live - Tori Amos | Her best trio line-up. Spectacular, expansive playing on this tour.
4. Book: The Guest - Emma Cline | A riveting novel reminiscent of Joan Didion and Bret Easton Ellis.
5. Podcast: You Don’t Know Mojack | Every episode is a deep dive into an SST release in chronological order – a Herculean task with a bevy of special guests from the then nascent Southern California hardcore and punk scenes.
6. Album: Salt Sermon - Missouri Executive Order 44 | Dear. God. This band is the real deal. Their live shows are a force of nature. Go see them immediately.
7. Video: “Spiritus Naturae Aeternus” - Dustin O'Halloran | The dance and choreography of Fukiko Takase mixed with the director’s vision and O’Halloran’s music is stunning.
8. Book: Bad Boy… | Artist Eric Fischl’s memoir. Come for deep insights on creating art, stay for sordid tales about the Lower East Side’s art scene in the 80s.
9. Food: Blue cheese risotto | I can’t stop thinking of this side that I had with my grilled salmon at Crush Wine Bar and Grill in Amarillo, Texas.
10. Cassette/CD: Activate the Rainbow - Shiny Around the Edges | A labor of love for your listening pleasure.
