🐯💣 & FRIENDS
FAVORITES OF 2023!

Tiger Bomb Promo & Friends pick their favorite releases of the year!

🎉 Happy New Year! 2023 was another incredible year, arguably our best yet! At the beginning of the year we welcomed in a new Tiger Bomber, Makenzie Creden, and she hit the ground running! With the addition of Mak’s great taste, creativity, passion, and hard work we were able to secure the #1 spot on the NACC Top 200 Chart for FOUR artists and their fantastic new albums:

Wednesday’s Rat Saw God x4 weeks
The Clientele’s I Am Not There Anymore x2 weeks
Slowdive’s everything is alive x2 weeks
Sufjan StevensJavelin x7 weeks

In addition to that, Gold Panda’s Work made it to #1 on the NACC Electronic Chart, and Dengue Fever spent 4 weeks at the top of the NACC World Chart!

As always: We would like to thank all of the radio stations, artists, labels, managers, publicists, booking agents, tour managers, venue staff, interns, talent buyers, music writers, distributors, record stores, fans, radio promoters, and everyone else who keeps working hard to propel music and art into the world.

We kept track of all the releases we sent to radio in the Spotify playlist below! The playlist represents one song from each release we went for adds on in 2023! Note that the widget on this page only displays the first 100 songs, but in total it contains 125 songs and represents 7 hours and 26 minutes of music by Tiger Bomb artists!

Now on to the lists! We'll start things off with lists from the Shil and Mak!

Danzig - Danzig Sings Elvis - it's not a joke one off, this is a heartfelt, well executed ode to one's musical idol

Pedro Franke (Bonifrate, Guaxe)

Here's a quick Top 5 list with some new music I had the opportunity to listen to this year and that has stuck in my head for a while. It's all Brazilian, because we rock and we're back! Ranking is just a silly exercise in establishing hierarchy in chaos.

5 - Betina - Rasante
I love Betina's songs and here they're built with the help of Diogo Valentino and Dinho Almeida. It's a great album by some of my best friends and I guess I played some bass somewhere.

4 - Lê Almeida - I Feel In The Sky
So beautiful to see Lê and his friends flying high! Always the boldest indie rock you can have.

3 - Luiza Lian - 7 Estrelas / Quem Arrancou O Céu?
Speaking of boldness, this is a labyrinth of an album, you will never listen to it the same way you had before and it will always lead you somewhere new.

2 - Ava Rocha - Nektar
Ava is a Queen, she rocks! Jonas Sá's production and Ava's songs will lead you through a journey in the coolest clouds of Brazilian Music, fresh and new!

1 - Julia Mestre - Arrepiada
This was THE big surprise to me! What a record! Rio's won!

═════════════════════

Ali Genevich (Laveda)

Here are my top 10 albums of 2023 (in no particular order)

1. Principia - En Attendant Ana
2. Blue Rev - Alvvays
3. Careful! - Deeper
4. Rat Saw God - Wednesday
5. Traveling Exploding Star - Paper Lady
6. SOS - SZA
7. Memory of a Mirror Image - Hotspit
8. I Love To Lie - Lowertown
9. Desire, I Want To Turn Into You - Caroline Polachek
10. Memorial - Thus Love

═════════════════════

Ben Goldberg (Ba Da Bing! Records)

Naujawanan Baider - Khedmat Be Khalq (Feeding Tube) This Afghan-American guy in Arizona makes sound collages of Afghan folk music which sound like overwhelming orchestras. It's a completely distinct sound, really unique, and totally immersive. The closest comparison is Muslimgauze, but this is more Maximalgauze.

Thinking Fellers Union Local 282 - These Things Remain Unassigned (Bulbous Monocle) - Much needed compilation of this nineties group who took Beefheart atonalism and set it to melodies, mash-ups, and simple lovely ballads. Bonus Flex: one of the tracks from my zine, Badaboom Gramophone, appears on it.

Sylvester - Private Recordings (Dark Entries) Nothing innovative here, just someone playing standards on a piano and singing over it, but I always love intimate recordings that sound so personal and unadorned. Also, thinking of it in the context of this being made by the person who is known for this makes it extra special.

She Spread Sorrow - Orchid Seeds (Helen Scarsdale Society) - Alice Kundalini is from Italy and makes creepy, sparse, ominous songs, which she talk/sings in a hushed whisper over. It's very Grouper's Evil Sister, but more along the electronic experimental bent than sparkling in guitar sound.

Spirit Possession - Of The Sign (Profound Lore) - Extremely satisfying black metal/thrash hybrid. Great playing.

Laurel Halo - Atlas (Awe) - A descendent of GAS, with a full-on "everything" sound that nonetheless seems so quiet and entrancing. You can focus on something different every listen - it should come with a sticker that says "1000 Possible Listening Approaches!"

Eiko Ishibashi - For McCoy (Black Truffle) I've never listened to her before, and that was my mistake. These are longform compositions that sit somewhere between jazz, post-rock and experimental, and perform the difficult task of holding my interest.

Julia Sabra & Fadi Tabbal - Snakeskin (Beacon Sound) Two Beirut musicians making pop songs from elements that are anything but. Lots of errant sounds, mesmerizing loops, discordance...but so melodic and beautiful. This is what I always wish 98% of dreampop sounds like.

Various Artists: Preds le temps d'ecouter: Tape music, sound experiments and Free Folk Songs by Children from Freinet Classes 1962-1982 (Born Bad Records) Célestin Freinet was an educator who came up with a concept for teaching that allowed children to explore and invent. This is a compilation of LPs made from what resulted when they were allowed to play with a wide range of instruments and electronics. I always loved the Langley School Music Project for it's earnestness, but this is a whole different level, given how wild and inspired the sounds are - it goes from noise to folk to electronic to straight out experimental.

Cruel Diagonals - Fractured Whole (Beacon Sound) Layers of vocals expand and release with deft touches of electronics and percussion. Obviously, the singing is great, but this is the album where Cruel Diagonals reached a whole new level of songwriting.

Barbara Manning

1. Music on Fire - s/t, (s/r)
No doubt, some will think I am placing this LP here at number 1 because the artist is my husband, Dan Vargas, but instead it’s here because of it’s intensive, undefinable, 3-D volume scariness that makes my hair stand on edge. Listening to the song Dagger Down, I feel as if I am surrounded by a gang of Dan Vargas’ all flashing steel and making stabbing motions toward me.  I feel myself spin around in avoidance, but I don’t know when to dodge the thrusts.  Exciting!
My favorite song is Work on Time, a commuter’s nightmare song that enhances morning panic attacks.  (musiconfire.space)

2. Sufjan Stevens - Javelin (Asthmatic Kitty Records)
There was some chattering on Postcard about Stevens being a flavor of the week, or some such nonsense.  No, this guy is the real deal.  The album Javelin is a multi-faceted art piece, if you bought the deluxe edition with book, like I did. Simultaneously absorbing all the visual art, short essays, and dense musical taffy certifies, for me, Sufjan Steven’s brilliant legacy.  However, at times the music feels over tracked.  He hides behind the production, me thinks.  I like his quieter numbers on this record best. I’ve recently decided that my late-mother’s love for Cat Stevens is kinda like my love for Sufjan Stevens.  Favorite song: Everything Rises

3. Sparklehorse - Bird Machine (Anti)
This album received instant love on the first day of its release, and multiple plays since, in our home.  So glad to have one more record from Linkous!  Because the record is without much visually, the white cover has me thinking what I’d decorate the cover with if I could have, so I dropped the album a notch. Musically, this album is more of a favorite than my 2nd choice because it rawks, is real, and gave me countless times of bouncing in front of the speakers to my Favorite song: Daddy’s Gone

4. Harry Von Zells - Play It Backwards (Igor Records)
In a place of honor, I give this Pittsburgh band my top 4th spot! Lyrically, the words make me squirm with familiarity. They are so…honest. Check out Dear John.  Insecurity Rules! Musically, I was reminded of that magical time when 100 Flowers and the Embarrassment were heard with regularity at parties I attended.  This is the new party record for the Indie nerdy people! I wish. Favorite song: Play It Backwards

5. Tiny Ruins - Ceremony, (Milk! Records/BA DA BING!)
I’m hooked on this New Zealand band, lead with soothing female vocals (Hollie Fullbrook) and equipped with such lovely songs. Listening, I think of Glen Campbell, Paul Simon, but with a perfect female voice, not too showy, not too shy. Incredibly listenable, Ceremony quickly became a repeat on our turntable, especially because of this Favorite song: Out of Phase

6. Nighttime - Keeper Is the Heart, (BA DA BING!)
I thought this was an older folk record when I heard it.  High lilting female voice, I thought of Opal.  The earthy instrumentation clearer than the lyrics-sometimes her voice sounds as murky as a catholic boy choir. I can’t make out a word of lyric and they’re written by hand in 6 font on the back of the record.  This record is enchanting.  It sounds ancient for being born this year.  Favorite song: When the Wind Is Blowing

7. Harp - Albion, (harpband.com)
Only having this album 1 day I know it is going to be regularly sought after for more listens over the years.  THAT SMITH SOUND! His voice scratches a long aching itch.  His band supports perfectly.  The “M” word needs not be mentioned. After only a few listens, already my Favorite song: Country Cathedral Drive

8. Rain Parade - Last Rays of a Dying Sun, (Label 51)
This is a nice record with easy-going tempos, melodic leads and multiple vocalists. None of the songs are as poppy as their early days, instead the songs are well-blended psychedelia with pleasing choruses and middle 8s written and sung by wizened guys who have been there and know that it is good. Favorite song: Last Rays of a Dying Sun

9. Famous Mammals - Instant Pop Expressionism Now (Siltbreeze Records)
An energetic record that has a wide range of modern cacophony, from slow intimate leg winders to songs that remind of pogoing on the beer keg.  A record for fun times, when you can have some. (siltbreeze.bandcamp.com) Favorite song: Let the Light In

10.   Cuticles-Major Works, (Siltbreeze Records)
Pop tunes done punk rawk, with a w.  That means it is fun and slightly sloppy, and when played loudly enough, gives you an impulse to dance with little regard to what is around you.  Nice male/female voices and zero lead guitar! Credits on the record include thanks to Emily Dickenson and Buster Keaton. Favorite song: Cheese in my Brain

11.   Barbara Manning-Charm of Yesterday, Convenience of Tomorrow, (BA DA BING!)
All of these songs were recorded in solitary sessions. Most of these recordings were a lucky break during periods of food insecurity and lack of self-esteem.  Things are better now. I’m grateful to those at BA DA BING for throwing this fragile compilation together. Favorite Song: Don’t Hold Back

Dr. Michael Seman (Director of Arts Management at Colorado State University, Vocals and Guitar at Shiny Around the Edges)

My top ten music experiences of 2023 in no particular order:

1. Alan Palomo: World of Hassle – A Sade album crossed with a Bryan Ferry solo record in a William Gibson future, filtered through Alan’s exceptional insight, wit, and usual sonic brilliance. As with all his work, it takes you on a journey.

2. Ghost Canyon Fest – Shiny Around the Edges was fortunate to play the inaugural edition of this eclectic music fest in Denver, Colorado. We thought it would be largely filled with noise-rock bands, but it was refreshingly diverse in genre, ethnicity, and gender.

3. OFF! live at Saint Rocke – I had no idea what a force of nature OFF! is live. I caught their set at the venerable Hermosa Beach venue Saint Rocke and have thought about it ever since. I can’t wait to see them again.

4. Starfruit: Be Begin Beginning Begging – Yet another fantastic band from Denton, Texas. This album is upliftingly unhinged with excellent songwriting. I implore everyone to listen to this album and see Starfruit live… you will not be disappointed.

5. Bob Mould live at Washington’s – I didn’t know how a solo electric Bob Mould show would go, but, spoiler alert, it was awesome. Held at Washington’s in Fort Collins, Colorado (where everything sounds amazing), Bob absolutely delivered. Songs from Husker Du, Sugar, and his solo albums… there was no downside to this equation.

6. Tori Amos at Red Rocks – If you are a fan, you know. If you are not a fan, check out her YouTube channel. A magical night.

7. TreeFort – On my list every year. A great music festival in a great city with great people. This is what happens when everyone is on the same page in a city and there are solid people in charge of a festival. The Cumbia bands this year were awesome and I thinnnnnk it was the 14th time I’ve seen Built to Spill. Make this a vacation destination for 2024. If you do go, be sure to swing by Bar Gernika for Basque cuisine – outstanding.

8. Dolo Tonight – My former student is signed to Epitaph and released the EP, Life’s a Party then You’re Dead in 2023 (maybe 2022? Meh, time is a flat circle after the pandemic). I often found myself singing the hooks from this release throughout the year. Infectious pop with much deeper undercurrents lyrically. Definitely checkout the song, “Hotels,” if nothing else.

9. Since were here, also listen to the EP I Hope Hell Isn’t Real by Roe Kapara. Another Epitaph artist, Roe draws from 90s grunge and that era’s polished singer-songwriters, then thrust those ingredients into today’s future present. Again, so many hooks to sing for days.

10. The PBS documentary, Chinatown Punk Wars is an absolute must see. The development of Los Angeles’ punk rock, new wave, and hardcore scenes is documented in various books, yet there hasn’t been much attention paid to the venues in Chinatown – Madam Wong’s and the Hong Kong Café – that significantly helped develop those scenes. Again, an absolute must see.
